Motion graphics by Lyon van den Oord • Cinematography by Alejandro Orengo • Production by Dr. Thomas LaVeist
A good friend of mine Alejandro Orengo, a Baltimore based filmmaker, reached out to me and asked for my help for a documentary he was filming for Dr. Thomas LaVeist, who at the time was the chairman of the Department of Health Policy and Management at George Washington University.
My task was to create a series of animatics to accompany and visually describe the narration explaining the fight or flight response. This health-oriented topic called for clean and clear infographics to convey the message properly.
Initially I drew up storyboard sketches to solidify and refine my ideas before production to ensure we were all on the same page. After a few revisions, the sketches were approved and production of the animation began.
I used Adobe After effects to animate the sketches I had previously made in Adobe Illustrator. I then took the videos provided to me by Alejandro and tracked the motion of the camera movements in 3D space so I could apply my animations to the footage.
Dr. Thomas LaVeist’s documentary premiered in Brooklyn, NY on June 16th, 2018.
